1. Karl Kuntz, The Stone at Worlitz 1797

The English garden of Worlitz, sometimes called the Dessau-Worlitz Garden Realm, was the creation of Prince Leopold Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau, a devotee of Rousseau and admirer of the Enlightenment ideals. Exotic, mystic and strange, filled with labyrinthine passages, pagan temples that were antiquated in appearance, statues of nymphs and fauns and all other pagan delights one would expect to find in a recreational park transformed into an initiatory passage into the Eleusinian Mysteries, the gardens of Worlitz culminated in the Temple of the Night. The piece de resistance of the park, this temple was a tower of black stone from which volcanic pyrotechnics would erupt after dark.
